Government announces further council tax freeze
Posted on 6th October 2011
Councils in England are to receive an extra £805 million from Government to help them freeze council tax during the 2012-13 financial year.
This support is in addition to the £650 originally provided to encourage council tax freezes. Although councils cannot be forced by the Government to freeze bills, those that limit the spending rises to 2.5% will receive the money they need.
George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer, commented: ‘A second year's council tax freeze will give real help to households in difficult times and this extra funding will make a positive contribution to those local authorities who wish to keep council tax’. Under the plans, homes that live in an average B and D property will save £72.
All English local authorities will soon be provided with more information about the latest scheme from the Department for Communities and Local Government.
